- Accident Reconstruction Unit -
The Somerset Police Accident Reconstruction Unit is
made up of officers who have received specialized training in accident
investigation. All reconstructionists have received
training from the Kentucky Department of Criminal Justice Training
and/or the Institute of Police Technology and Management (IPTM).
The accident reconstruction unit is responsible for the investigation
of serious injury and fatal traffic collisions within the city.
Officers utilize a Laser Technology, Inc. total station forensic
mapping hardware and software package accident reconstruction and
crime scene diagramming.
Prior to the purchase of the total station, officers reconstructing
serious or fatal accidents relied on traditional distance measuring
tools such as a wheel or a tape measure. The laser-equipped
device does the same task faster and with greater accuracy.
The total station works similar to land surveying equipment, utilizing
an electronic transit, a glass prism reflector and an external
computer.
The accident reconstruction unit consists of Captain Jeff Phillippi,
Officers Jeff Girdler, Larry Patterson, Greg Martin, and Eric Moore.
