VICTIM ADVOCATE
With the push in law enforcement
right now on domestic violence, the Somerset Police Department saw a need for a
Victim Advocate Division. The goal of our program is to provide assistance to
our victims of violent crimes, regardless of age, sex or social background. The
program has provided assistance to victims of violent crimes in the form of
legal and medical advocacy. Information regarding victim compensation claims
and assistance with filing the claims, have been provided when appropriate. Our
division provides support services including, but not limited to, emergency
services, crisis counseling, and referral to service based agencies. The
ultimate goal is to restore the victim to normalcy as soon as possible
following their victimization by violent crime. We also encourage and assist
victims in the prosecution of perpetrators when it is appropriate to do so.
All sworn officers of the Somerset Police Department are included in this
program, and have received extensive training in dealing with domestic
violence.
The program director is a sworn officer of the Somerset Police Department,
Detective Anthony McCollum.
The Victim Advocacy Division is also active with all support groups and the
Bethany House Spouse Abuse Shelter, along with Kentuckians Voice for Crime
Victims Organization.
The Victim Advocacy Division of the Somerset Police Department is located in the
Somerset Mall at the Somerset Police Sub-station This allows victims to meet
with the Victim Advocate in a relaxed atmosphere (which most of the victims
prefer), rather than in the downtown police station. The Victim Advocacy grant
also covers 65% of the officer's salary, basic utility bill and basic telephone
bill at the sub-station.
If you would like to contact
Detective Anthony McCollum, you may email him at the Somerset
Police Department. or call him at his office (606) 678-5178.
