Explorer Post 516
The Somerset Police Department
sponsors a Law Enforcement Explorer Post.
Post 516 is made up of 20 young men and women ages 14 to 21, who have an
interest in public service.
The explorer post was
established at Somerset P.D. in the late 1970’s. The program had faltered and was given
to Ptl. Allan Coomer in March of 1990.
Under his direction the program has grown to 20 members. The Post serves the community by
assisting the police department in ways such as traffic control at special
functions and by assisting with public safety programs given by the
department. In addition, they are
trained in all aspects of law enforcement. They are given the opportunity to
show off their training at competitions held annually.
In January of 2001, after ten
years at the helm of the explorer program and a couple of promotions, the now
Lt. Allan Coomer handed the reins over to Officer Jeff Girdler. Officer Girdler has been an advisor with
the Post since 1992 and has been running the day to day operation of the
exploring program since then. Lt
Coomer remains active with the post, however as Committee Chairman while
Officer Girdler is the new Senior Advisor.
