SPD Emergency Response Team
The Somerset Police
Department Emergency Response Team (ERT) serves as a select, specialized,
flexible unit which is utilized in delivering police services to unusual or
special problems or situations requiring a concentration of personnel without
interrupting normal police functions. The unit is made up of officers from
divisions within the department. Headed
by Major Randy Goff and Team Leader Sgt. William Hunt, ERT is a tactical unit
charged with the responsibility of handling critical incidents. Hostage situations, high risk search and
arrest warrants, barricaded subjects, and sniper incidents are a few of the
incidents ERT is ready to handle.
The members of ERT
are selected from the ranks of the department.
Candidates compete for openings through testing in firearms, physical
fitness, and an oral interview.
Successful candidates must be in good standing in the department and
have a good recommendation from their supervisor.
ERT members receive
internal training in both firearms proficiency and tactics. In addition to in-house training, member attend training classes held by nationally and
internationally recognized facilities.
